Understanding line type

Is it a cell phone or a landline?

A line type lookup can classify a phone number as mobile, landline, VoIP, or toll-free. Enter a number in the free lookup to see its reported line type and other number details.

What the result means

Line type describes the kind of phone service associated with a number. A mobile result points to cellular service; a landline result points to a fixed-line service. VoIP numbers use internet-based calling services, while toll-free numbers have their own category. An invalid or fake result indicates a problem with the number rather than a usable line type.

For example, a contact list may contain one mobile number, one office landline, and one VoIP number that all share a familiar area code. Their first three digits alone do not tell you which service each uses. Look up the complete number and read the line type in the result.

When a line type check helps

Line type is useful when cleaning contact records, reviewing numbers collected through a form, or choosing which records need a closer look before a calling or messaging workflow. It gives you a category to work with, rather than a guarantee about a particular contact.

Numbers can be ported between providers and, in some cases, between line types. Availability of updated porting information varies by country. In particular, Canadian number details may reflect the original assignment rather than later portability changes. Treat a result as number metadata, especially when your decision depends on a recent change.

What a lookup cannot establish

A line type result does not identify the person who owns or uses the number. It does not establish consent to call or text, whether a call or message will be received, or whether someone currently possesses the phone. Number origin is based on the area code and prefix, not the phone's current location.

Check one number or a whole list

Start with the free lookup to understand an individual result. If you have a spreadsheet, upload a list for batch processing. To add line type checks to an application, explore the Phone Validator API.
