Two different questions
Phone number validation vs. verification
Validation examines the number and its metadata. Verification asks whether a person can demonstrate control of that number. Knowing which question you need to answer helps you choose the right step for your workflow.
What phone number validation checks
Validation checks whether a number appears to be a usable phone number and can add details such as line type, phone company, number origin, and fake or invalid indicators. For example, a number with an invalid North American area code can be flagged before it enters a contact list. A number with valid formatting may still need a deeper check for fake or invalid indicators.
Phone Validator provides these number lookups through the free lookup, batch upload, and API. The result describes the number. It does not identify who submitted it.
What possession verification asks
In a signup or account recovery flow, verification commonly means sending a one-time code to the number and asking the person to enter it. A successful code exchange provides evidence that the person could access that call or message at that time. It does not establish the person's legal identity, long-term ownership, or consent for unrelated contact.
The word “verification” is sometimes used broadly for a validity check. If a vendor says it “verifies” numbers, check whether it means number metadata, an attempted delivery, or a code challenge. Those steps answer different questions.
Which step fits the decision?
Clean a contact list
Use validation to flag invalid entries and understand line type before working with the list.
Understand a new signup
Validation can describe the submitted number. A separate code challenge is needed if the signup must demonstrate access to it.
Choose a contact workflow
Line type and validity are useful inputs. Neither step by itself grants permission to call or text.
Start with the number check
Try a free lookup for an individual number. For a list, upload a file for batch validation. If your application needs number details during a workflow, explore the Phone Validator API.
